The DVD release of The Magic Flute in the USA is unfortunately non-anamorphic, and the UK dub, according to review at DVD Talk.

I wonder if we will see ever see the American dub of The Magic Flute on DVD in the future.

Sigh...it figures. First Imavision, then this. Fortunately I still have the Televista release version.

I'm glad I transferred the Vestron version to DVD, even though it came out kind of choppy.

I bought this yesterday. While it was nice seeing this film again after many years, the UK dub leaves much to be desired. The opening titles seem to have been altered to a brown background and a different typeface for the credits (which also includes "www.smurf.com"!). Also after having seen this film and read a few of the Papercutz Smurf comics, I noticed that the Hanna-Barbera cartoons actually did a much better job of developing personalities for the Smurfs than Peyo and his writers did. Peyo certainly could plot a story or a gag, but his Smurfs mostly seem generic, a group of interchangeable look-alikes. Hanna-Barbera's writers created a community of recognizable personalities that could play off of each other that seems to be absent from "The Magic Flute", a film that slowly moves along from each gag and plot point to get to its conclusion giving little thought to the personalities of most of its cast, except for Peewit.

Debbie, you have to know that The Magic Flute story was in the Johan & Peewit and the first story to feature the then new character, smurfs.
So peyo obviously not fine tune the character, smurfs is originally a supporting character so that's why smurfs lacked polish compared to their own series.
And the 1976/1983 movie is no exception, peyo knew this is a Johan & Peewit story so he have no choice to keep it stayed to the original story.
The big reason why the movie is pale in comparison to the H-B series is that it's Johan & Peewit story originally not a smurf's
You gotta have to thank you Johan & Peewit because without them the smurfs would never existed.

I have read the English translation of The Smurfs and the Magic Flute, so yes, I am aware that it was the introduction of the Smurfs. (It is a shame that we never got to read any of the other Johann and Peewit stories in the USA.) Perhaps it may be a bit unfair to compare it to later Smurf adventures. But in the handful of Smurf comics I've read, most of the Smurfs aren't named and even our main protagonist is usually just called "Smurf". The few that are named are usually just playing out their personality as a running joke (Grouchy complaining, Brainy endlessly philosophizing, Jokey and his "surprises", Smurfette as "the girl", etc....and even Hanna-Barbera was guilty of perpetuating some of these gag personalities, while adding another dimention to most of them.). I am not putting down Peyo as a storyteller, as he certainly wrote some fun stories, just commenting that it seemed that the stories were the biggest focal point over coming up with a dynamic cast of characters. And I am quite fond of The Smurfs and the Magic Flute, and more than happy to add it to my collection.

I think I know why it's the UK dub...its distributor is Fabulous Films, which also distributed the film in the UK on DVD. Yeah, thanks for the un-memories.

More wasteful products that say "they'll buy up anything that has Smurfs on it". Please, Warner, just give us the season sets and stop smurfing around with the fans.

I agree with Vic. We already have DVDs from both seasons. We don't need a best of from them. It's ridiculous. What about new DVDs releasing the rest of the seasons? Come on WB. This is just dumb.

I saw The UK version of Smurfs And The Magic Flute back in November on Netflix last year. I'll be honest I wasn't very impressed with the dialouge changes and the voices weren't all that great. I like The US version more.

Here in Brazil it's even worse. In 2011 some Smurf DVDs were launched each according to themes, not to seasons. And I was told they haven't got the same dubbing 30 years ago, when the cartoons were broadcast on Brazilian TV (1982). Therefore I didn't buy any of them, I've always preferred that every DVD would be released with each determined season and not those miscellaneous collections. [Frown]
So that I agree with Vic, Shaney and Swarlock these "best-Smurf-episode-DVD-sets" are not such a good idea. It even seems a marketing ploy.
Waste of time, WB. [Frown]

I don't see why WB don't offer "made to order" season DVDs for Smurfs like they did for the SilverHawks Season One Vol. 2.

NEWSFLASH:
Looks like the long wait is over, since Fabulous Films (in conjunction with Arrow Films) has released the first two seasons of the Smurfs cartoon show on 4-disc DVD set for the United Kingdom. So you see, as I was browsing their website this morning, when all of a sudden - I catch the glimpse of three more upcoming DVDs for the United Kingdom; which are exactly three more seasons from the show! (Seasons 3 - 5)

No release date has confirmed for these DVD sets yet, but here are the front cover of them:

THE SMURFS: COMPLETE THIRD SEASON (4 DISCS)
 -

THE SMURFS: COMPLETE FOURTH SEASON (4 DISCS)
 -

THE SMURFS: COMPLETE FIFTH SEASON (4 DISCS)
 -

So the rest is assured, although it's just four more seasons to be out on DVD for the United Kingdom, and that's that!

Smurfy news for the UK collectors, and I really love those cover designs. But, my smurf... the trouble I had with the Season 1 and 2 box sets. Every copy I bought and exchanged was delivered with at least one disc out of place and scratched, or glitched on at least one episode. And even my Season 1 UK DVDs, which I exchanged twice, turned rotten with some form of sticky residue on Discs 1 and 4.

I'm happy with my Australian Ultimate Collection sets. Stylish packages, no faults with any of the discs, and all the Johan and Peewit episodes that I imagine will be missing from these. I'll pick up the Season 9 UK box set if they remember to include the one missing episode from the Aussie box set, but otherwise, I'm done buying the series. That is unless it's eventually released on Blu-ray.

IT'S SMURFINGLY OFFICIAL

I recently search the Smurfs items on Amazon to see what's coming up, and there I found these DVD sets again:

The Smurfs: Complete 3rd Season
The Smurfs:Complete 3rd Season

Smurfs: Complete 4th Season
The Smurfs:Complete 4th Season

Smurfs: Complete 5th Season
The Smurfs:Complete 5th Season

And this time, I shall be happy to confirmed that they will definitely released in summer individually to UK stores on June 3rd.

When 'The Smurfs and the Magic Flute' was launched in Brazil (about 2 years ago) at that moment I couldn't afford it, and when I could, it had become hard to be found then.

 -
But at last I found it yesterday! As Sassette usually says, SMURFAROO! [Big Grin]
The curious thing is that, as I mentioned in other post here, the cover back tells the production is said to be American (1976) and the cover back tells the production was Hanna-Barbera's, what it's not true. That's a Franco-Belgian production, with music of Michel Legrand ('The Thomas Crown Affair' and 'Summer of '42'). [Happy Smurf]
