I'm a little concerned about how it looks like the discs will be packaged inside the book and against the pages, it could make it challenging to get the discs out without leaving scratches on them. Having said that, WOW INDEED! That is a very nice looking set, it'll probably be expensive, and that's not to mention the shipping and GST of the set from Australia to the UK. Even if it does cost me though, I don't think I could resist that. I'll be sure to import.

You want to get a multi-region DVD player. A multi-region DVD player plays all discs from all countries on your television.

You can buy a multi-region DVD player here.

Not only you need a region-free DVD player, it needs to play PAL discs. I hope your television is PAL-compatible as U.S. TVs use the NTSC standard. Australia uses the PAL format that is also used in Europe.

>> Get a Universal DVD player and play any DVD from anywhere in the world.

Onesimos, most of the multi-region (aka region-free) players I linked to perform PAL to NTSC conversion on-the-fly, which is built-into the chipsets used by the players. Conversely, they will convert NTSC to PAL.

That means that the disc will work regardless of where you are in the world, or what type of TV you have.

Here is a longer technical explanation:

There are two issues that occur when you buy a regionalized DVD (almost all DVD video discs).

1) The disc is coded to only work on one type of player (Region 1, USA and Canada for example).

2) The disc is coded for a specific "broadcast standard" (PAL or NTSC).

Each region of the world has its own DVD player and discs. Discs must match the player. Region 1 discs sold in the United States or Canada work on Region 1 players. Region 1 DVD players are the type of DVD players sold in the USA and Canada. Other countries have different region numbers built into their discs and players.

Another issue is the broadcast standard. Different places broadcast video in different ways technically - and they are not compatible with one another. If you live in the United States, Canada or Japan your TV will be NTSC. If you live most elsewhere, your TV will be PAL.

This explanation is a gross simplification of the situation. There are exceptions. But these are the basics.

So what happens when you insert a disc into a DVD player? First, the player checks to see if the region matches.

DVD Player: "ok disc, what region are you?"
DVD Disc: "I'm a region 1 disc"
DVD Player: "I'm region 1 too. I'm going to allow this"

Another scenario:

DVD Player: "ok disc, what region are you?"
DVD Disc: "I'm a region 2 disc"
DVD Player: "No way, I'm a region 1 player, you are forbidden"

Region free scenario:

DVD Player: "I'm set to region 0, I'll play anything"
DVD disc: "Ok brah who cares what region I am"
DVD Player: "Awesome you are authorized to play".

But let's assume we make it past the first test, or that we have a region free player. The next issue is the video or broadcast standard.

On a non PAL-to-NTSC converting player:

DVD Player: "I can only play NTSC video"
DVD Disc: "NTSC? What is that? I'm PAL..."
DVD Player: "I'll output the video all messed up or not at all".

On a PAL-to-NTSC converting player:

DVD Player: "I can play NTSC, PAL, SECAM you name it"
DVD Disc: "Cool bro because I'm PAL".
DVD Player: "No problem. I'll just change you to NTSC so you work on the TV with no issues..."

That's basically it. A good multi-region player ignores the region code and converts the video for the television automatically.

If you're using a digital HDTV connection like HDMI or DVI, PAL and NTSC are basically irrelevant because the signal is being upconverted in many cases regardless. There are other issues, like "Regional Coding Enhancement (RCE)" discs which are explicitly made to disrupt region-free players, and all sorts of minutiae regarding video conversion, but most of the time that is not important for most people.

I recommend to just get a good multi-region player and you should be fine.

Many of these DVD players also play the DivX format common on the internet as well, FWIW.

Holy Smurfs!
That's one smurfy boxset!
I love magna for doing this!
About the DVD region and player region.
Aussies always got the best stuff!
PAL or NTSC doesn't matter In thailand we used
both PAL and NTSC standard i don't why but that's
pretty convenient.
And for the DVD player i just lucky to have the
same DVD player as the ones on dvdexploder.com
so i just follow their instruction and use the
remote input "access code"
and be able to access the hidden menu that's can
change the DVD region freely I just set it to
Region 0 so that my DVD player can plays all titles worldwide! (LG DVD player since 2004)
But my PS3 sadly a US so it only plays region 1
and all region (0) I can't watch the HD upscaled.
The best way is leave the region code to "ALL"

A new UK DVD just came up for pre-order on Amazon, and I have to say it's a massive kick in the smurf. It's just four episodes, and currently does not specify which ones they are. I've been waiting 8 months for something new from Fabulous Films, and this is all they give us? Where's Season 3?? I'm going to wait to see if it's newly released episodes, which would mean that Fabulous Films have obviously used the same method that Warner Bros did in the US, or four selected from the Season 1 and 2 sets, which would make this a cheap cash-in in the run up to the movie's release.

Look what ShowsOnDVD just announced.

Tomorrow sees Warner's release of The Smurfs - A Magical Smurf Adventure, and the studio has today announced that they'll follow it up quickly with an October 4th bow of The Smurfs - Holiday Celebration. This 48-minute disc comes with the second-season installment "The Smurfs' Christmas Special", and the seventh-season's "'Tis The Season To Be Smurfy". Video is full frame, audio is English stereo, and there are English subtitles as well. Cost is $14.97 SRP, and here's a look at the packaging:

Smurfs Holiday Celebration

It'll be available sometime in October and feature two Hanna Barbera Christmas specials. [Smile]

No, it just shows that Warner Bros. are becoming greedy buggers.

True. But if it's not WB, It's Disney or Sony. They all do the same thing. It's not a charity here. It's not right but that's how it is for better or worse.

I'm not asking companies like WB to be charities, just to be fair in their pricing of content, even if it's content that isn't as popular as their own properties such as Looney Tunes or DC Comics animated material. But I guess some people aren't interested in the concept of "fair trade". In an Ayn Randist society, this stuff would end up costing up to $100, if not more.

There are two Smurf DVDs for sale in Brazil now but just with some episodes and Brazilian Portuguese dubbing. I'm a bit afraid this last one won't be the same of 29 years ago. [Roll Eyes]

 -

The DVD above has eight episodes, but the site where I found the images didn't mention which of them.

 -

Yet this one has got six ones: "The Smurfette" (sure...), "My Smurf Valentine", "Smurfily Ever After - Special", "Queen Smurfette", "Speak For Yourself Farmer Smurf" and "Smurfette Undone". To be sincere I'd prefer that each Smurf DVD here in Brazil could be launched with episodes of one determined season, not necessarily all of them, instead of this miscellaneous collections. Well... Better than nothing. [Frown]

One nice thing about the new "A Magical Smurf Adventure" DVD is that some of the episodes include the "Don't miss today's Smurf Adventure" clips from the original NBC broadcasts. Disc one's shows have Smurfette's voiceover with clips from season one's episode, "Sideshow Smurfs" (not included on this disc), and Disc two features Papa Smurf's voiceover with clips from "A Mere Truffle" (on that actual episode!) and another with clips from "The Good, The Bad and the Smurfy" (which isn't on this disc). It was nice to see these clips again, which I hadn't seen in years. I think Clumsy Smurf also had a voiceover clip used for previews as well, but these aren't on this disc.

I am afraid that I don't have the know-how to copy the clips from the disc, and posting them online when I am not the creator of the works is a bit of a gray area. Maybe someone else knows where to find them online. As for the clips themselves, they just consist of episode clips with a character voice-over (and sometimes sound effects), with no new animation.

I've just placed my order for the Ultimate Collection 1 box set, meaning that when it turns up I can sell my Season 1 and 2 DVDs, as well as some of the videos I've been holding onto until the series came to DVD. When I get it I'll also be sure to post pictures and leave a review here.
