BlueBuddies.com recommendation - 9/10
Good things come in small packages - that's especially true when we're talking about Smurfs! At only five episodes long (and three apples high), True Blue Friends is the smallest collection of Smurf episodes released to DVD so far - but this single smurfy disc is packed with fun!
Let's take a peek inside...
Kid Friendly Warner has released a Smurfs DVD that lives up to the "Kids WB" logo on the back of the box. This disc is definitely kid friendly, featuring a selection of episodes perfect for children yet entertaining for Smurf fans of all ages! The latest Smurf DVD is priced so that any parent wouldn't think twice about picking it up. Smurfaroo!
Season Two? Smurfy! True Blue Friends has five episodes from Season Two. It's exciting to see the evolution of the Smurfs show during Season Two, including an updated version of the Smurf introduction (be sure to check it out at the beginning of each episode). New favorites such as Tracker Smurf and Sloppy Smurf also make appearances.
True Blue Treat! It's a perfect little true blue treat! Adventure, excitement, mystery, ghosts, magic-potions and evil villains are always sure to please. And when you add The Smurfs, it's a treat to enjoy!
The Menus. Gorgeous menus have become a staple of Smurf DVDs and the trend continues here. Featuring brand-new, custom Smurf artwork designed just for True Blue Friends, navigating the menus has never been smurfier. Be sure to check out all the menus, because there are great Smurf pictures everywhere!
The Shows. A smurfy little collection of Smurf episodes from the second season!
We start off with S-Shivering S-Smurfs, which is a great introduction to the character of Tracker Smurf - he definitely has a nose for things! When The Smurfs are unprepared for winter, must they face the shivery consequences?
Turncoat Smurf features Brainy Smurf doing what he does best - causing trouble and constantly annoying the other Smurfs - but this time, he may have gone too far!
The Smurf Who Couldn't Say No teaches about the virtues of self-confidence and self-reliance... and how to overcome your fears and self-doubt. Self-improvement, Smurf style!
The Haunted Castle features human friends Johan and Peewee, the Smurfs, and a house....with a ghost? Discover the secret of the haunted castle.
The disc ends with the scary The Black Hellebore which has the Smurfs caught in a trance of an evil plant. Will the Smurfs be able break free from the spell of the Black Hellebore ... and save the kingdom?
It's easy to get spoiled when watching a Smurf DVD - the extras and bonus material never seems to disappoint - and True Blue Friends offers no exception to the rule.
A Smurf special called Meet The Smurfs pretty much explains everything you could ever possibly want to know about three of our true blue friends: Papa Smurf, Grouchy Smurf and Tracker Smurf. This Smurf character guide is a super smurfy journey into the world of Smurfs!
Also included are trailers for Peanuts Deluxe Holiday Collection, Sesame Street Presents Follow that Bird, Scooby-Doo Where are You? Volume 1, Tom and Jerry Tales Volume 6, The Real Adventures of Jonny Quest and The Wiggles Present Dorothy the Dinosaur.
This disc packs a whallop - five smurfy episodes and exclusive DVD extras all in one package.
However, the disc does raise some questions. First, why does the spine of the DVD case say "1 Volume" when the disc itself says "Volume 1"? Does that mean "Volume 1" of a series, or something else? The five episodes on this disc are all from Season Two - so, is this part of a Season Two release? How will the rest of Season Two be released? What is the plan, Warner? Plus, the video remains in its original 1980s state - why wasn't the video re-mastered?
Papa Smurf's Recommendation
This is a fun collection of Season Two episodes at a great price.
Any collection of Smurf shows on DVD is something special - being able to finally own these fantastic shows is a treat in itself. Getting the bonus character guide is a smurfy bonus that makes the disc even more fun!
If you want a nice little collection of five classic Smurf episodes, this disc is a "sure thing" proposition. At this price, not even Gargamel could resist.
