Smurf History Lesson: Who was George Washington? George Washington (1732-1799) was the first president of the United States of America. After success in the military, Washington became instrumental to the creation of the Constitutional Convention at Philadelphia in 1787. Once the Constitution was ratified, the Electoral College unanimously elected Washington President of the United States and he served two terms. After that he just wanted to live out his days with his wife Martha at Mount Vernon. One of the most famous myths told about George Washington involves him chopping down a cherry tree. When asked by his father if he cut down the cherry tree George admitted, "Father, I cannot tell a lie. I cut the tree." An interesting fact about George Washington is that he had wooden teeth.

Smurf History Lesson: Who was Abraham Lincoln? Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865), nicknamed "Honest Abe", was the 16th president of the United States. He most notably guided the country through the Civil War and began the process that led to the end of slavery in the United States. Lincoln gave his famous speech, the Gettysburg Address which dedicated the battlefield to all of the perished soldiers and called for the living to finish what the dead soldiers began. It was because of Abraham Lincoln that the United States was able to remain one united nation, not divided into the North and the South. Abraham Lincoln also issued the Emancipation Proclamation which declared freedom for all slaves in the Southern states. The nation morned his death when he was shot in the back of the head while he attended a play in Washington, D.C. Abraham Lincoln was the first American president to be assassinated.
