Smurf History Lesson: Who was Christopher Columbus? Christopher Columbus (1451-1506) was a famous explorer who unintentionally discovered the New World when he was searching for a route from Europe to Asia. In 1492, he sailed three ships (Santa Maria, Niņa and Pinta) with the mission of creating a new trade route and spreading Christianity. He also promised to bring back gold, spices and silks from the Far East. King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain gave Columbus the ships, supplies and men he would need for his exploration. Columbus also asked for and was granted the the title of "admiral of the ocean seas" and governor of all discovered lands. After a long time sailing, Columbus finally reached what he thought was India. Instead he had landed on a group of Islands near America - Columbus had unknowingly discovered America! Although other explorers, like the Vikings, sailed to the Americas long before Columbus, it was Columbus's explorations that led to the European colonization of the western hemisphere.
